Concept of yellow fish standing out over other fish

Change is constant and inevitable. It is a force that is always present and constantly impacting our personal and professional lives. As such, leaders must embrace and manage change effectively to achieve organisational success.

As leaders, we are tasked with guiding individuals or teams through a process of transformation. Whether a small-scale change within a department or a large-scale organisational change, our role is to provide direction, support, and guidance to ensure a successful outcome.

Leaders need to have a clear vision of the desired outcome to lead change effectively. This involves setting specific goals, objectives, and timelines for the change process. A clear vision ensures everyone involved in the change process is aligned and working towards the same goal.

Understanding stakeholders goes much deeper than traditional project methodologies. Leaders must be able to identify the needs and concerns of each stakeholder group and develop strategies to address them. This requires empathy, active listening, and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.

The importance of change as a discipline for ourselves, our staff, and our teams is increasingly critical to successful delivery. Leaders must create a culture of continuous improvement, where change is seen as an opportunity for growth and development. This involves developing the skills and capabilities of staff and teams to manage change effectively.

If you do this well, when you create:

Awareness: you will hear… “I am aware of…”

Understanding: you will hear… “I understand why…”

Acceptance: you will hear… “I accept that I need to…”

Adoption: you will hear… “I am able to…”

Sustained: you will hear… “I will continue to…”
